Winter Botany Walk at Smith Creek Preserve

Join Eric Fuselier of the Arkansas Native Plant Society - Ozark Chapter and Jennifer Ogle of the University of Arkansas Herbarium on a winter tree and shrub identification tour at The Nature Conservancy in Arkansas's beautiful Smith Creek Preserve in Newton County. We hope also to see some of the early spring ephemerals that occur at the preserve. The trail is rated moderate to strenuous, and is about 2 miles round trip.

The Arkansas River creates many recreational opportunities for us to enjoy. Join Lake Dardanelle State Park staff for O.W.L.S. (Outdoor Women Learning Skills). This program series is designed to give ladies the opportunity to explore the available recreation at Lake Dardanelle and the surrounding areas, by learning skills and knowledge that they need to enjoy nature. The series will be from 6-9 p.m. one evening a month for 6 months. Registration will be $30 per night.

Lake Dardanelle State Park is proud to offer free winter lake cruises for the best chance of seeing our national symbol, the Bald Eagle. Many other spectacular birds will be in the area for viewing including American white pelicans, ducks, and snow geese. Please dress warmly, as temperatures and winds are more severe on the lake. In an effort to accommodate as many people as possible for our tours, we will be taking reservations. Call the visitor center at (479) 967-5516 to reserve your seat. We will begin boarding 15 minutes before the tour at the boat dock near the tournament weigh-in facility. Tours are weather dependent.

Winter brings new things to appreciate at Mount Nebo State Park; no leaves on the trees means an unobstructed view of the Arkansas River Valley, and the cold weather means there won't be any bothersome bugs. Join a park interpreter on a gorgeous hike on a 2-mile portion of the Rim Trail. The hike will be easy to moderately difficult. Wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water.

The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) played a large role in the development of Mount Nebo State Park. They built the cabins that park visitors stay in, they built trails that park visitors hike, and they built the highway that park visitors drive to the park on. What as their daily life like, though? Join a park interpreter to discover what they to day life of a CCC Enrollee was like.

HIKE TO NEBO SPRINGS
