This week’s edition of This Weekend in the River Valley has a heavy focus on Fall Festivals and Halloween Happenings. There is a LOT going on! We tried to keep our focus fairly local. If we missed your event, please let us know! We’ll try to do an update.

2018 marks the 12th season of Sunset Cinema, which aims to enhance the quality of life in the Russellville area by bringing together members of the community.

Sunset Cinema is an outdoor movie theater which operates on the lawn of the Lake Dardanelle Visitor's Center. There is no admission for the October 26 event. These family-friendly events brought over 2000 attendees last year. The fall event will feature Disney's Coco. The movie begins at approximately 6:30 p.m. Activities will take place prior to each showing starting at 5:30 p.m. IN THE EVENT OF RAIN SUBSEQUENT DATES HAVE BEEN SCHEDULED.

All are welcome to attend this no pressure, no questions asked free lunch. Doors open at 11:30am. Fresh coffee is served and then lunch is served at 12pm to 1pm. In addition to the wholesome and delicious hot FREE LUNCH served two other offerings for our Neighbors are now available:

Guests who come for lunch can now pick up a sack lunch to take with them and have a second free meal; and, after lunch, there are usually “take-outs” available (and, as always, generous portions of “seconds” are served before dessert.)

Also, the clergy and people of All Saints’ have begun a new “Loaves and Fishes” ministry, with Sunday morning offerings at the altar now including necessities like cereal, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, toilet paper, toiletries, hand soap, and detergent. The available items gifted each Sunday will be distributed on the following Saturday to Neighbors Table guests after the meal.

We are celebrating Autumn in Arkansas with Lake Dardanelle State Park’s Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest. Sidewalk chalk artists are invited to take part and create a picture of their favorite thing about fall in the state park. Registration is $5 and participants and chalk is provided. Space is limited. Interested participants should sign up at the visitor center. Artists need to check-in at the visitor center Lakeview Room, can begin working at 11 a.m., and should be finished by 1 p.m. Awards will be given out at 2 p.m. following the conclusion of Critter Crunch.

Lake Dardanelle State Park’s diverse habitats provide homes for many creatures large and small. Join a park interpreter in the kids' corner of the visitor center as she describes some of the smaller creatures. Who could you hear out in the forest on an autumn night? Join Lake Dardanelle State Park and the Pope County Library Bookmobile for our Autumn in Arkansas Story Trail all about owls. We will also dissect owl pellets. We will meet in the grassy area across from the visitor center. Please dress appropriately and bring a flashlight.

Sleepy Hollow Hike

Join Park Interpreter BT for a hike into the westernmost hollow, or canyon, of the Seven Hollows area. There we will hear a short version of Washington Irving’s story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and find out if our hollow too “continues under the sway of some witching power.” This hike is moderate and covers uneven terrain in darkness. Please bring a flashlight for the walk out.
